Our Favourite Christmas Adverts

The countdown is on and the office is in full festive mode, so we thought we’d share some of our favourite Christmas ads from this year!

Meg - John Lewis

This year, John Lewis’ tells a very different story.

‘The Beginner’ sees a man trying to learn how to skateboard and no matter how many times he falls and hurts himself, he gets up and gives it another go. Why? Because he’s about to foster a child who’s also a keen skater. The ad hits hard emotionally and concludes with the heart-wrenching message that ‘over 108,000 children in the UK are in the care system’.

A message like this has never had so much exposure before at Christmas, especially from a brand as big as John Lewis, which is why it is Meg’s favourite Christmas ad this year.

Meg loves the storyline, the emotional journey it takes you on,  the surprise ending that delivers such a powerful and unexpected message, and the inclusion of  their key charity partners, Action for Children and Who Cares? Scotland.

Izzie - Disney UK

Disney’s ad follows on from last year’s Christmas campaign –  a young girl scared of the dark comforted by a Mickey Mouse plushie gifted by her sibling, which she still loves in 2022.

This time, the young girl is expecting a new sibling and feels a bit neglected because her mum is so distracted. But the story ends happily when she passes her Mickey onto the new baby, sat with her brother who gave it to her in the first place.

This ad aims to raise vital funds for Disney’s lifelong charity partner, Make-A-Wish International.

Izzie loves the ad because it shows Disney’s magic at Christmas, from the presents to the baubles on their tree. Plus it makes her reminisce about childhood memories of watching Disney films with family at this time of year.

Importantly for Izzie, Disney uses nostalgia from childhood movies to great effect, like animation style and Easter Eggs for example. Look carefully and you’ll spot posters of Darth Vader from the Star Wars franchise and Bruno from Encanto, as well as soft toys of Jasmine from Aladdin and Stitch from Lilo and Stitch. It’s fun for the audience to find these in the ad.

Sophie - Asda

Asda hires a new employee this Christmas, Buddy the Elf, who just happens to be the main character in one of Sophie’s all-time favourite Christmas movies. Predictably Buddy’s induction is a mishap strewn disaster, until he’s left alone overnight, transforming the store with the most magical Christmas decorations anyone could dream of.

This is Sophie’s favourite Christmas ad this year because nostalgia marketing combines memorable lines from the film with today’s Asda employees. This technique is really effective because memories of childhood or past times create a warm and fuzzy glow.

For Sophie, the first blast of nostalgia comes from the music. As kids, she and her sister would sing along at the tops of their voices to ‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town’ to get into the Christmas spirit. While another nostalgic memory is dreaming of having Buddy’s toy store decorations in her house. She giggles with happiness that he’s done the same for Asda.

Daisy - Aldi

Kevin the Carrot is back!

After showing ‘Ebnana’ Scrooge the error of his ways last Christmas, Aldi’s plucky carrot returns as Kevin McCallister from Home Alone and quickly goes missing. A brilliant send up of a classic movie, it’s the strong connection to the original film that makes it Daisy’s favourite ad this year.

Home Alone was essential Christmas viewing growing up. So, seeing Kevin the Carrot as Kevin McCallister brings back so many happy memories. She especially loves the bit when Kevin says sorry for not seeing the Eiffel Tower, but at least they saw the ‘trifle tower’! Packed with comforting nostalgia and cheeky humour, Aldi delivers another effective festive ad.
